Violinha Street
Violinha Street is the narrowest street in the city, connecting Old Praça Square to D. Paio Mendes Street.
The name "violinha" results from a possible alteration of the name "vielinha". It is believed that the name of the street comes from the popular cavaquinhos (ukuleles) that were made in some houses in this street.
For some time it was popularly known as "Rua das Galinheiras" (street of the chicken coops) as roosters, chickens and turkeys were raised there and walked freely along the street.
In this street it is still possible to observe a piece of the Fernandina wall, that in its construction reused the remains of the Roman wall, whose ruins are still there.
