Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square

The Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square or New Field, located in the parish of São Vicente, was inaugurated in 1725, on the initiative of the Archbishop of Braga D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles.

It had several names such as Gavião Square, Gavieira Quarter, Quinteiro Quarter, New Field of Reduto and Reduto Quarter, the current official name, Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square, was assigned on January 4th, 1898, by proposal of the then vice-president of the City Hall.

In the centre of the square is a statue of Pedro V of Portugal, built in 1869 in Santana Field and later moved to its current location.

In addition to the garden, this square also features a granite fountain at the northern top and the Conde de Carcavelos Palace, built in the 19th century, which once served the Ministry of Health.
