Briteiros’ Mountain
The archaeological ruins of Briteiros, exhibited in Guimarães at the Society Martins Sarmento's Archaeological Museum, prove the existence of a primitive people, of pre-Roman origin, belonging to the so-called "castros" of northwestern Portugal.
Martins Sarmento, a famous ethnologist and archaeologist, born in Guimarães in 1833, was in charge of the scientific study of these ruins, having contributed in a decisive way to their study, conservation and divulgation.
The numerous constructions offer impressive and very decisive clues to the knowledge of the characteristics of the Castro culture, even if strongly Romanised at the beginning of the Christian era.
Situated on top of the hills, the ruins of Briteiros are protected by several fortified walls, whose extensive walls can still be easily admired today.
