Arch of the New Gate
Considered one of the most popular buildings in Braga, the Arco da Porta Nova or “New Gate” was built in 1512 by order of archbishop D. Diogo Sousa de Sousa.
Despite its name, this arch never had a door, since at the time of construction wars no longer occurred with the frequency of previous centuries and therefore the door was considered redundant.
The Arch of the New Gate was one of the eight existing gates in the city which led only to a fish market, instead of leading to paths created already in Roman times.
With this building came the expression "You are from Braga", directed to someone who always leaves the door open.
