European Tree of the Year
Braga Municipality and Museu dos Biscainhos presented the 'Tulipeiro da Virgínia', located in the garden of Museu dos Biscainhos, to the contest, and this is already one of the finalist trees to represent Portugal in the European contest 'Tree of the Year 2021'.
The contest aims to highlight the importance of ancient trees in the cultural and natural heritage, not only focusing on the beauty, size or age of the tree, but also on its history and relations with the community.

The European Tree of the Year competition came into existence in 2011 and was inspired by the Czech Republic's popular Tree of the Year competition, organised by the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation. Since then, the number of countries involved in the competition has increased.
At national level, the competition is organised by UNAC - the Mediterranean Forest Union, which enables the winning Portuguese tree to compete in the vote for European Tree of the Year.
