Bracara Augusta

Once the Cantabrian Wars that ended the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula were over, and the pax romana installed, the Roman Emperor Cesar Augustus founded three cities in Northwestern Hispania, one of them is Bracara Augusta.

The name is inspired by the indigenous people who occupied the territory, the bracari, and the epithet AUGUSTA, in honour of the Emperor who founded it, approximately between the years 16/15 BC.

Over the centuries, Bracara Augusta gained preponderance, even becoming the capital of the new province of Gallaecia in the 4th century. As an imperial city, it developed important commercial, juridical, religious, political and administrative functions, providing the appearance of various public spaces for leisure.

Preserving and valuing History and the vast heritage is the motto which leads to the annual recreation of this period of history, commemorating Bracara Augusta and transporting all those who visit it to the daily life of those who lived there.

Braga Romana takes place every year in May or June, and recreates a Roman market, a stage for circus arts, dramatic performances, war simulations, mythological personifications, juggling, musical interpretations and ballets from the time of Bracara Augusta.
