ACTUM 3
Once upon a time... a day when nobody died. In the collective imagination dwell figures that move between the real and the mythical. The mourners, women hired to mourn the dead in wakes, inspired the play "The Sisters".
The text is a cut adapted from the novel 'The Intermittences of Death', by José Saramago, with dramaturgy and staging by Luciano Luz. In this allegory about life and death, the emblematic mourner sisters despair at the unexpected event: Death's strike! In the plot, the carpenter sisters mourn the dead. But their beliefs are put to the test when they are faced with the unexpected news that not a single death has been reported in the whole country? An unusual situation that provokes reflections and dialogues in the play, and brings a certain dose of humor about how life works. And so, the mourners go through other paths, new possibilities in the face of the current existential crisis of humanity. The concern with the evils of the modern world, the appreciation for the simple things in life that we often fail to notice, the greed, pride, and lack of discernment of men, are all mirrored in this play in a very light way. When we may eventually imagine that mourners have long since disappeared, we may be mistaken, for these women, are still out there!
