Braga Youth Center hosts the 2nd edition of “Treat cancer by you”
One year after the first edition of the event “Treat cancer by you”, the Braga Youth Centre (CJB) is getting ready to welcome, once again, cancer specialists. On Thursday, February 9th, at 6:30 pm, the CJB Auditorium will be the stage for the second session of the initiative, where the focus of the conversation will be the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
The moment will count with the presence of the renowned pathologist Manuel Sobrinho Simões, director of the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of the University of Porto (Ipatimup). The objective of the initiative is to inform about the most recent therapies in the fight against cancer, simplify concepts, draw attention to the importance of early diagnosis and place patients at the center of the discussion.
The CJB will also host the specialist in Molecular Genetics, José Carlos Machado, and the researcher, José Manuel Lopes, both from Ipatimup. In addition, the researcher at the Institute of Research in Life Sciences and Health, at the University of Minho, Estevão Lima, will also be present. Finally, the actor Jorge Serafim will enter the stage to humanize the theme through folk tales and a dash of humour.
In the press release, Jorge Carlos Machado explained that the main purpose of the activity is to “deconstruct some dogmas associated with cancer”. Although the disease “kills more than 10 million people worldwide and more than 28,000 in Portugal, its diagnosis is far from being a death sentence. In fact, early diagnosis, and progress in treatment, place us, today, in a situation where cancer associated mortality is less than 50%”, explains the head of the health area. In this way, the initiative is aimed at “all citizens”, since “a well-informed cancer patient is a better treated patient”.
“Treating cancer by you” began its second edition on January 19th, in Porto. The conversations will take place until the 23rd of March, in four other district capitals, addressing different types of cancer, such as breast and lung cancer.
The event is free, but registration is required. Registration for the session in Braga takes place through this link. For those who cannot be present at the moments, the six sessions of “Treat cancer by you” will be converted to a podcast on Antena 1, which will be available on RTP PLAY and on streaming platforms.
